FOURTEEN
Vogel and Saslow left for the hospital straight away then. They had to cope with considerable holiday traffic heading back to various destinations after a weekend by the seaside. It was getting on for ten oâclock when they crossed Barnstaple Bridge, on their way to the N.D.D.H. out on the Braunton road.
Vogel called Perkins upon arrival and learned that Delia had now been moved to a general ward. Perkins had made it clear to all concerned that Vogel and Saslow needed to interview her ASAP, but he had also been told that whilst there had been further improvement in her cognitive powers, she was not considered to be fully recovered from her concussion yet, and they would have to wait until she had been seen again by the duty doctor. The DC was sitting in the lobby area outside Deliaâs ward, keeping an eye on all comings and goings, as instructed by Vogel. And when the DCI and Saslow joined him, he was able to tell them that the duty doctor had just arrived and was in the ward.
Twenty minutes or so later, the doctor stepped outside and informed the three officers that he considered Delia was now well enough to be interviewed.
âOnly, please make it as brief as you can, and I canât allow three of you in,â he added. âMiss Day is a very strong woman, but sheâs been through a lot today.â
Vogel and Saslow left Perkins on sentry duty. The nurse in charge greeted them as they entered the ward and guided them to a curtained-off area.
Delia was sitting propped up in her bed, arm in a sling, the bruise on her head vividly prominent. Vogel knew exactly how badly knocked about sheâd been, and she looked the part. But she seemed reasonably lucid and was considerably improved from when Perkins had been allowed a glimpse of her.
âTwice in one day, Mr Vogel,â she said. âIâm honoured. Canât think what I could have done to deserve it.â
Vogel smiled.
âI think you probably can,â he murmured. âHow are you feeling, Miss Day?â
âDelia, for Godâs sake. How do I look as if Iâm feeling?â
Vogel smiled again. He did not bother to respond directly. The doctor had already remarked on Deliaâs strength. Vogel did not doubt that she was one tough cookie. He admired the womanâs spunk, but he just wanted to get her version of the dayâs events. As quickly as possible, just as the duty doctor had requested. Also, he had been advised that she might still be suffering from a degree of concussion, and Vogel was well aware that this was a condition which manifested itself in many different ways.
âDetective Sergeant Saslow and I need to ask you some more questions, Delia,â he began, obeying her request to use her Christian name, whilst not inviting her to use his. He almost never did that.
âWe will be as quick as we can,â he continued. âMore than anything, Iâd like to know how much you remember of what happened at
